Shopping experiences for cowboys and cowgirls
HeeHaw! Stagecoach is right around the corner and it brings a lot of people to town and everyone will be clicking their heels, whistling and humming those great western tunes from up valley to down valley. There will be cowboys and cowgirls everywhere. If you want to join them you might want to visit the stores I am covering this week, as they truly relate to Stagecoach, held in Indio.
Western Wear and instruments don’t just relate to Stagecoach, as many people enjoy the western wear as a style all year long, and wear them to many events with western themes. While visiting these stores: you will be quite amazed at the extensive collections both of these stores have. Musicians Outlet and Pony Express have both been around for a long time, and if you haven’t been to these stores, stop by and “explore,” as I always say. The treasures you will find will be unbelievable, and the money you spend will certainly be doing good for our local economy. Just yesterday, I visited a store I hadn’t been to before, and to my amazement I found vintage perfume bottles (I collect them), and I also found exquisite jewelry that was made by an 83-year-old woman designer. And all of these were on sale for unbelievable prices! This is what I mean, when I say “explore and discover these hidden treasures.”
Musician’s Outlet, 44850 San Pablo (3 stores North of Highway 111). The store has an enormous array of everything possibly needed by any learning professional or seasoned musician along with many other things for those just interested in music and instruments. Randy Hewitson, the owner, has been in business in the Coachella Valley for 26 years. He is Canadian born, from Winnipeg. He’s lived in the Coachella Valley for 56 years. Randy’s expertise in the music industry came to him at a very young age, and he produced his first music event at the age of 21. Randy has produced many shows along with being a talent booker.
The store is organized in such a great fashion that it is easy to find what you are looking for. This is thanks to the organization set up by his wife, Cindy, who also does the buying, accounting, managing and sales for the company. You will find everything artistically displayed, as you can see in the pictures, along with the instruments being in an exceptional variety of colors, quality and price point. At the Outlet they have over 40,000 titles of sheet music for sale, they have studio rooms for lessons, and they even have a repair station in the Outlet. Their pricing is competitive with any internet or big box sales companies.
They are open six days a week: From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, closed on Sundays.
Randy is an advocate for helping the community, by allowing events to be posted in his window, as well as promoting other businesses by maintaining their business cards. This is such a friendly and accommodating store in this field, and everyone in the store is very knowledgeable, and helpful while at all times being friendly. You will find many famous people visiting his store. Guitar repairs are a known specialty of the Outlet , along with having one of the largest selection of guitars for sale in Southern California.
Randy is also a co-owner of SIR which supplies studio instrument rentals for events. If you don’t have it and need it, you want to contact Randy or one of his partners, as they can rent you any kind of instrument you may need. SIR has a multi-decade history in business as well. As you can see Randy is not only talented, but is a smart business man as well. It is a treat for people to be able to shop in such a fine establishment with such professional knowledge and experience behind its doors.
Pony Express; 68535 East Palm Canyon Drive, (across from the IMAX theater on Highway 111.) A shining star is now located in Cathedral City by the name of Pony Express, formerly in downtown Palm Springs. They also have another store in Idyllwild. This new property is quite attractive and you can’t miss it, as you drive down Highway 111. Owner Patrick is celebrating his 10th year at his two core stores. The store is definitely known for its Western Chic clothes, from Western apparel, boots, hats and accessories. They carry many lines, including Panhandle Slim, Scully, Roper, Wrangler, and many more. A large collection of boots are on display, not only for adults, but for children as well. Work boots which are very popular can also be found there, along with Carhart work pants, which are known to be the most durable and indestructible pants one can own. They are great for men doing heavy work. Fashion has changed towards the country style, and has adopted the Western fashions. Rock-a-Billy, and Country Music in today’s market are so well adapted with each other that it has produced a look relating to Western apparel. You will find clothing with much detail and bling to attract the eye. Western wear is no longer plaid shirts. The whole Western industry for clothing has changed and so has the merchandise one can find at the Pony Express as well.
I would classify Pony Express as a chic, yet classic Western wear store. Prices are current and competitive. You must see their exciting collection of self-action puppets that are so real looking, which are for sale. A larger selection of these puppets can be found in the Idyllwild store, with a smaller collection in the Cathedral City store. Parking is never a problem. They have their own private parking lot at the rear of the store, as well as parking right on Highway 111. A lot of specialty treasures can be found as well in the store. They pride themselves on carrying quality within reach. So mosey on in to Idyllwild and say “Hi” to Janice, or to Brian at Cathedral City who are there most of the time to help you with your selections.
